The organisers of the Gulf Radical Cup have announced that the new series will start in October.

The fifth season of lightweight sports car racing will feature eight races. The exact calendar is yet to be confirmed, but as well as the Dubai Autodrome the events are likely to take place at the Losail circuit in Qatar, the Sakhir circuit in Bahrain and the Yas Marina circuit in Abu Dhabi.

Last year’s champion, UAE-based racer Bassam Kronfli will be back to defend his title. Kronfli and fellow UAE driver Christophe Hissette are currently flying high in the Radical European Masters series.

The cars are prepared by Dubai-based racing specialists GulfSport Racing. Barry Hope from GulfSport said the series represented a chance to see the development of Middle Eastern motorsport.

“We have seen growth every year and I don’t think the economy is hurting people that want to race – they will race if it’s the last thing they do!” he said.

“These cars are serious bits of kit, a lot faster than the likes of touring cars and the best we have to offer in the region. We’ve had some fantastic races, it’s pioneering stuff.”
