2008 Ford Explorer Review
Although car-based SUVs
or crossovers are gaining in popularity for their smoother ride,
better handling, and easier interior access, the Explorer remains a
good choice for families looking for space and comfort. Available
with a V6 engine, the Explorer competes against the Chevy
TrailBlazer, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Toyota Prado and Nissan Pathfinder. The 2008 Explorer has not
changed much since the last couple of years. But it is quieter
than previous models, the rear seats fold flatter, and the interior
has been improved throughout. Ford has upped the Explorer in terms of looks, features and price over the last few years. The days of an Explorer for AED88900 are long gone. Despite, the 2008 Ford Explorer is pleasant to live with
and compares well with the competition. A handsome sports utility
vehicle, the Explorer continues in true American tradition of adding some
bling. Up front, the American fascination with shiny metal trim
continues with the Explorer making generous use of chrome,
big-and-bold lamps, and square-cornered aero mirrors to make this
latest-generation SUV the most stylish Explorer from Ford in a long
time. Inside, the rear seats
fold to offer a completely flat cargo bay while the interior has been
improved throughout. Flexibility is a highpoint in this SUV, with
five, six, or seven passenger seating configuration. Ford adds new standard
and optional safety features and says the Explorer is designed to
meet all known frontal- and side-impact crash requirements through
2010. Side curtain airbags are standard on 2008 models, voice
activation is added to the optional navigation system, and top-line
Limited models get standard power adjustable pedals. Three new
practical features include a capless fuelling system and 20-inch
wheels. Ford’s Sync entertainment and communication system have
been recently added. The Ford Explorer has
been a very under-rated SUV here in the Middle East although it is a very
competent machine, doing all that is asked of it... and more! It is as capable in the dunes as on the roads. Not to say that the Explorer will compete with the likes of Land Cruiser in terms of its off road capabilities, but one need not worry when taking this mid size SUV down the dunes occasionally - provided the driver is up for it. How good is Ford Explorer in Sand?
I am about to take the plunge an buy this vehicle and wondered if you had had a chance to get your hands on one?
My thinking is to be able to load the dirt bikes and get into the desert, or follow the bikes as a support vehicle.
My 1st choice would have been a 4x4 Ford double cab Ranger 4L petrol, or the equivalent Toyota Hilux. Unfortunately they don’t bring these into the UAE that I am aware of.
The real question:
• Do you think this vehicle has this type of offroad capabilities?
• In your 2008 test drive you mentioned that it is capable 'occasionally'. I have only been out into the dunes once, and that was in a Toyota Fortuner. If the Explorer can do what they did I am more than happy. Can it?
• If not, do you know how I can get my hands on the above mentioned cars?
