2009 Honda Pilot Launched In The Middle East
by Nabeel M. Ferzan on Sunday, 24 August 2008

Honda has launched the 2009 Honda Pilot (formerly MR-V) in the Middle East. For its second-generation, Honda Middle East has reverted back to the MR-V's original name 'Pilot' to unify it with its globally-known name.

The 2009 Pilot will feature three-rows of seating for 8 passengers and will be powered by a 3.5-litre V6 iVTEC with VCM (Variable Cylinder Management). VCM enables the engine to make use of 6/4/3-cylinders depending on prevailing conditions and driving style. The system was first introduced in the 3.5-litre Honda Accord that was launched earlier this year. The V6 is shifted using a standard 5-speed automatic transmission and makes 253 horsepower and 347 Nm of torque. Honda cites that the Pilot uses 11.8 litres of petrol for every 100 kilometres under test conditions.

Speaking at the launch event, Mr Toshiaki Mikoshiba, Executive Vice President & Director, Honda Motor Europe, said that Middle East was one of their most important markets in the world for their cars and hence they are looking forward to bring further new products into the market.

The 2009 Pilot will be available at all Honda showrooms across the Middle East starting this week with two grades to choose from – EX and EX-L with their indicative prices being AED124,780 (USD34,000) and AED137,625 (USD37,500) respectively. Honda has plans to sell 4000 units of the Pilot in its first year among 6 countries under its GCC market.

Answering questions on the introduction of hybrids in the Middle East in line with those in the United Kingdom and the United States, Mr. Shunichi Uchida, General Manager, Honda Motor Company (Middle East Office) said the they are in discussions with the Road & Transport Authority (RTA) in Dubai about the possible introduction of hybrid Honda taxis in the Emirate.
