Audi Planning R4, R6 and R10 Sports Cars
by Udit Bhandari on Sunday, 16 November 2008

In the wake of the awesome R8’s success Audi is planning to roll out a complete series of R-series sports cars starting first with the R4 which is likely to roll out in 2011. The R4 will be positioned above the Audi TT and below the R8 and will feature a mid-mounted engine, R8 like looks including LED lights, deep air intakes, a low slung profile and seating for two. To enhance the R4 performance quotient it will be endowed with the legendary Quattro 4-wheel drive system with a 40:60 torque split in favour of the rear wheels and adaptive magnetic dampers for better handling.

The R4 will be powered by Audi’s range of TFSI engines starting with a 2 litre turbo and the new 335bhp 2.5 litre 5-cylinder units from the TT RS. Chances are that the R4 will come with Audi’s hi-tech diesel V6 motor and petrol V6 too. A 6-speed manual transmission will be standard, with a 7-ratio S tronic twin-clutch semi-auto as an option. It will come in Coupe and Roadster versions and according to the Auto Express (U.K) the R4 is likely to retail at around U.S $ 52,000.

There are rumours that the Audi-Porsche joint venture will see the R4 providing the platform for the new Boxster and Cayman, both of which would also be its arch rivals in the market. Apart from the R4, Audi is also working on a R6 to compete with the Porsche 911 and Jaguar’s E-Type replacement car. Not stopping there, Audi also want to build a range topping R10 based on the V12 TDI R8 diesel concept. The R10 will feature the V12 diesel unit which pumps out around 500 bhp yet returns about 25 mpg and meet Euro VI emission norms. Porsche is also likely to benefit from Audi’s new R-series platforms and engines.
