Having set records
recently at the famed Nurburgring with the GT-R, Nissan went on to
set yet another record, only this time it was not with one of their
petrol-powered cars, but with the X-Trail FCV (Fuel Cell Vehicle)
that is still undergoing testing in the US and Japan.
The hydrogen-powered
concept SUV clocked a lap of the circuit in 11 minutes, 58 seconds
which by far is nowhere close to any records of any sorts. But the
lap still made it to the record books as Nissan did not have any time
to beat as this was the very first time a fuel-cell vehicle did such
a run at the German circuit.
The car was driven by
Frank Eickholt, who drives Nissan’s race cars at 24-hour endurance
events. The X-Trail FCV produces 118 horsepower along with 207lb-ft
of torque with the top speed rated at 150km/h. It uses a lithium-ion
battery pack with thin laminated cells that starts the vehicle and
boosts power under acceleration. Energy during braking is captured
and stored in the battery.
